Career Pathways for Engineers Manager/Supervising Engineer Track
A next step for engineers after several years of experience is moving into the manager/supervisor track. Managers/supervisors are still involved in day-to-day engineering work, but spend a majority of their time leading their teams and looking at how to improve the quality of power for the customers. Things they do include:
In charge of projects, using detailed plans to accomplish goals and thinks through, in advance, if project will be successful.
- Plan and direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities and equipment.
- Hire employees, assign, direct, and evaluate their work.
- Come up with policies and how to follow them for the engineering work performed in the department, service, laboratory or firm.
- Review and write reports; enforce rules; and make decisions, including whether to buy specific materials or services.
Additional Education Required: While no additional degree is required, companies typically provide training in supervisory and leadership skills.
Number of years of experience: Typically ten years.
